Hot Topics in Plastic Surgery

You, the patient, have been asking Plastic Surgeons for years for a simpler, safer and more natural facial rejuvenation with an easier recovery.

The bad news is that there isn't anything now, nor is there likely to be anything in the near future which you can do on your lunch hour that erases ten years of aging and lasts for ten years.

The good news is that there has been a quiet revolution in the field of facial plastic surgery. Frederick plastic surgeon Dr. Donald Kress suggests that while the majority of Plastic Surgeons were off chasing bigger and ever more aggressive face-lifting, several small groups in the US, France, and Belgium, were going in the opposite direction. By working with smaller incisions, limited cutting, folding of the deeper facial layers instead of radical cutting, they were trying to achieve facelifts with results comparable to the full blown modern facelift. Surprise, not only did they achieve their goals of smaller incisions, faster and safer procedures, but they made it MORE natural. This occurs because the standard facelift lifts the face in a backwards and upward direction and for many people this isn't the best or the most natural direction. We spend the majority of our lives upright with gravity pulling down. Logically, the optimal correction should be opposite to gravity or upward and that is precisely what happens with the new mini-lifts.

The new lifts have names like "S-Lift," "MACS Lift," "Quick Lift" or "Lifestyle Lift," each of them have certain advantages and limitations. The ideal procedure sometimes incorporates features from several of these procedures. Obviously, a surgeon who is familiar with most of these procedures will have the skills to tailor your procedure to your particular needs. If you have been watching your face take on your mother's features but were afraid of a traditional facelift, you should consider discussing your options in personal consultation.

Before concluding, we have to deal with the "gadgets." There has been a major reversal in the fad of laser surgery so that it now plays only a minor role in facial rejuvenation. The exception is a new laser for tightening the skin called Fraxel. Barbed thread lifts and other devices including Thermage, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and more . All of these work a "little" but frequently the cost of these procedures for the degree or duration of improvement may be out of proportion.
